Batman and Buttermilk Vanilla Cake

When I won a cake stand in a work raffle a few years ago I thought, I’m never going to use this. Still, it was pretty, and I aspired to bake beautiful layered confections, so I moved the stand with me into not one but two different apartments, dutifully storing it on a closet shelf. Yesterday I finally used it to show off a from-scratch cake—buttercream frosting and all—complete with a Batman and Catwoman chase scene.

This is an appropriate cake for a 20-something, right? The LEGOs are actually a tradition in my manfriend’s family. His parents always used them as toppers on his childhood birthday cakes, so I couldn’t resist buying a superhero set for my creation. (Obviously I’m Catwoman.)

Decorations aside, the cake was a success. I used this recipe from Wonky Wonderful, and oy! It really doesn’t skimp on butter. My two 8-inch rounds baked and cooled perfectly, easily stacking with a slather of buttercream between them. Frosting the outside was another matter (the crumbles!), but I smoothed things over in the end. Then I blazed a trail and cued “Happy Birthday”…

A sweet birthday surprise indeed!

YOUR TURN: What’s the coolest birthday cake you’ve ever baked or received?
