Today’s run was awesome for two reasons: 1. It was the first 70s-and-sunny day in Milwaukee this year, and 2. It was the first time I ran to my new ’80s playlist.
I’m so excited for warmer weather that I couldn’t wait any longer to start making a spring running mix. It’s fun to wallow in winter folk jams at the start of the season, but by February I want everything to be happy and danceable. Some new Santigold, a bit of Missy Elliott and even a Carly Rae Jepsen track or two.
If you haven’t listened to the soundtrack of Broadway’s Hamilton yet, I suggest you do. I was skeptical when a friend forced me to listen to the highlights during a visit in December, but I got sucked into the vortex pretty quickly. But it wasn’t until recently that I went running to my favorite upbeat tracks and found myself picking up the pace. General Washington is just so. darn. empowering.

To run with music or without it? This spring I got into a heated discussion on the topic with my closest friend. I argued that runners should appreciate the sounds of their bodies in motion—the cadence of their breath and rhythm of their feet—or else they’re not truly enjoying the act of running, but rather drowning it out to make it more tolerable.
